Is New York City Vegan-Friendly? Absolutely!
Without a doubt, New York City is incredibly vegan-friendly. My first visit years ago left me astonished by the sheer volume and creativity of vegan options available at every turn. What began as a niche culinary movement has blossomed into a mainstream phenomenon, with new plant-based establishments opening regularly and existing restaurants expanding their vegan offerings.
Even if you’re not dining at a fully vegan restaurant, countless eateries across NYC proudly feature dedicated vegan-friendly sections on their menus. However, when you’re in a city as gastronomically rich as New York, I always advocate for diving headfirst into the full plant-based experience by visiting a purely vegan establishment. It’s an opportunity to savor innovative dishes crafted with a complete understanding of vegan ingredients and techniques.
My best friend and I have a tradition: every few months, we embark on a “foodie day” in the city, eagerly seeking out the latest and greatest in vegan cuisine and uncovering hidden gems. Through years of delicious exploration, I’ve cultivated an extensive knowledge of the top vegan spots in NYC, which I am thrilled to share with you here.
Why NYC is a Vegan Foodie’s Paradise
New York City truly is a dream destination for vegan food enthusiasts. Coming from a smaller town, the abundance of vegan options when I first arrived was nothing short of mind-blowing. Even after years of consistent exploration, I continue to discover exciting new plant-based eateries, ensuring this list remains dynamic and ever-evolving.
The city’s vegan scene is characterized by its incredible diversity, offering everything from elegant fine-dining experiences to casual, trendy cafes. Whatever your craving – be it exquisite sushi, flavorful tacos, comforting pasta, or decadent vegan ice cream – NYC promises an endless array of choices. The sheer number of fully vegan establishments is impressive, complemented by a vast selection of vegan-friendly options at non-vegan venues.
What truly sets NYC apart is its relentless pace of culinary innovation. New vegan restaurants and plant-based concepts are constantly emerging, ensuring there’s always something fresh and exciting to explore. This vibrant and ever-expanding culinary landscape makes New York City an unparalleled destination for any vegan foodie.
The Best Vegan-Friendly Neighborhoods in NYC
While vegan delights can be found throughout New York City, I’ve observed that the most concentrated hubs for plant-based restaurants are undoubtedly SoHo and Brooklyn. Opting to stay in or near these bustling areas guarantees you’ll always be within easy reach of delicious and innovative vegan cuisine, from casual eateries to upscale dining experiences.
SoHo, known for its iconic cast-iron architecture and cobblestone streets, is not just a haven for vegan foodies but also a vibrant district renowned for its chic cafes, high-end shopping, and captivating art galleries and museums, such as the Museum of Ice Cream. Whenever I find myself in SoHo, I love to punctuate my culinary adventures with a revitalizing workout class at a local studio like SoulCycle, balancing indulgence with wellness.
Brooklyn, particularly neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Park Slope, also boasts an impressive array of vegan establishments, reflecting its diverse and artistic community. This borough offers a more laid-back, yet equally innovative, plant-based dining experience, perfect for those looking to explore beyond Manhattan’s immediate buzz.
The Best Vegan Restaurants in NYC
Chloe (Beatnic)

If your heart yearns for comforting, familiar flavors served with a healthy, plant-based twist, Chloe is your ultimate destination. This trendy eatery offers a bright, modern atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a casual brunch, a quick lunch, or a satisfying dinner. Chloe, formerly known as ByChloe and later Beatnic, has recently re-established its roots with a brand-new location on Bleeker Street, much to the delight of its loyal fans.
Here, you’ll rediscover all the beloved classics that made Chloe famous, including the vibrant quinoa taco salad, the incredibly flavorful kale caesar salad (a personal favorite of mine), hearty veggie burgers, and an irresistible selection of sweets. Indulge in their famous cupcakes, chewy cookies, soft cinnamon rolls, and more. A significant number of their delightful desserts are also thoughtfully prepared to be gluten-free, ensuring everyone can enjoy a treat.
Planta Queen

Planta Queen is, without exaggeration, my absolute favorite restaurant in New York City. Its culinary prowess is so impressive that I once brought my notoriously picky uncle, and even he was astounded by the incredible flavors. He famously remarked that he “tasted flavors he never tasted before” – a testament to Planta’s innovative and delicious menu.
Their exquisite Asian-inspired menu is designed for sharing, featuring a tantalizing array of dishes perfect for a night out. Highlights include creative sushi rolls, rich dan-dan noodles, fluffy bao buns, and the legendary bang bang broccoli – a dish so exceptional, I would honestly walk to NYC just to savor it! The trendy, sophisticated atmosphere further enhances the dining experience, making it an ideal spot for any special occasion or a memorable evening.
And under no circumstances should you leave without indulging in their vegan matcha cheesecake. It’s an absolutely drool-worthy masterpiece that is a non-negotiable must-try for any dessert lover.
Jajaja Mexicana

When the craving for authentic and innovative vegan Mexican food strikes in NYC, Jajaja Mexicana is the definitive answer. Every visit presents a delightful dilemma, as I honestly wish I could order everything on their menu! This restaurant is proudly and entirely vegan, offering an extensive range of gluten-free options, making it a safe and exciting choice for many.
Prepare your taste buds for an adventure, from their legendary vegan nachos piled high with fresh toppings to house-made empanadas, an array of creative tacos, and satisfying burritos. Be sure to reserve some space for their utterly delicious vegan churros, served with a warm, rich chocolate dipping sauce – truly, the thought alone is enough to make me drool!
I cannot stress this enough: you must try their grande nachos; they are a perennial fan favorite for a reason. And for those who appreciate the versatility of jackfruit, their jackfruit carnitas tacos are an absolute sensation and highly recommended.
With multiple trendy locations scattered throughout the city, Jajaja is an excellent choice for both lunch and dinner. They also offer a fantastic weekend brunch, transforming traditional Mexican breakfast dishes into delectable vegan versions, such as savory papas con huevos and the hearty huevos burrito.
Willow Vegan Bistro

My sister and I had the unforgettable pleasure of experiencing Willow Vegan Bistro, and it quickly became one of our top recommendations. We still rave about their extraordinary vegan mac & cheese, decadently topped with crispy vegan bacon and aromatic truffle oil – it’s an absolutely incredible dish that elevates comfort food to an art form. And whatever you do, do not miss the chef’s sensational cookie skillet; it’s pure, unadulterated indulgence.
Willow specializes in gourmet vegan comfort food, skillfully reimagining classic dishes. Their menu features hearty vegan burgers, tender vegan steaks, and even a surprisingly realistic vegan brisket, all crafted to satisfy even the most traditional palates. While it’s a smaller, modern space, its intimate ambiance makes it an ideal choice for a romantic date night or a cozy gathering, ensuring a seriously satisfying and memorable dining experience.
Coletta

Searching for exceptional vegan Italian food in New York City? Look no further than Coletta. This charming and intimate dining spot redefines Italian classics with innovative plant-based twists, offering a truly authentic and satisfying experience for vegans and non-vegans alike.
Their menu boasts an impressive array of dishes, including delectable brick oven pizzas with perfectly crispy crusts and a selection of freshly made pastas. A standout dish is their vegan calamari, masterfully crafted from oyster mushrooms; its taste and texture are so remarkably close to the real deal that it truly fooled me, a former calamari enthusiast. As a huge fan of penne alla vodka, I was beyond thrilled to try their vegan lumache alla vodka, and it exceeded every expectation. The flavors are incredibly fresh, rich, and deeply satisfying.
And for the grand finale, I simply cannot resist their exquisite vegan tiramisu. This dessert was so inspiring that it actually led me to create my own recipe for no-bake tiramisu jars in my Sweets From Plants e-cookbook. While I might be a little biased, I genuinely believe my version is even better – a testament to how truly delicious Coletta’s original is!
Beyond Sushi
If you’re on the hunt for an astonishing vegan sushi spot in New York City, Beyond Sushi is the unparalleled choice. This establishment takes plant-based sushi to an entirely new level, offering creations that are completely vegan and fish-free, yet so masterfully crafted you’d hardly believe it.

They offer brilliant vegan renditions of traditional favorites, such as the spicy crab roll and the Philadelphia roll, alongside their own unique and imaginative in-house sushi roll creations that are bursting with fresh flavors and textures. Each roll is a testament to the versatility and deliciousness of plant-based ingredients.
But Beyond Sushi extends beyond its namesake (no pun intended!). Their menu also features other delightful dishes like comforting ramen, perfect for a cooler day, and an array of enticing vegan desserts, including their delightful ube cheesecake. It’s a comprehensive dining experience that caters to all aspects of a plant-based palate.

Complement your meal with one of their invigorating smoothies or unique wellness lattes, and don’t forget to pair it with a freshly baked treat from their tempting selection.
Anixi
Anixi stands out as a culinary gem specializing in exquisitely flavorful vegan Mediterranean dishes. While we enjoyed a lovely lunchtime visit, I highly recommend experiencing Anixi for dinner, as its sophisticated and intimate ambiance truly shines, making it perfect for a memorable evening.
Their menu is a celebration of Mediterranean flavors, re-imagined for a plant-based diet. I particularly savored their sensational dip mezze platter, which featured a trio of delectable dips: a light and airy whipped ricotta dip, a sweet kabocha squash dip, and a smoky fire-roasted eggplant dip. Each was served with warm, freshly baked pita bread, and every bite was an explosion of authentic, rich flavor.
Anixi also offers an impressive selection of Mediterranean staples, all expertly crafted with plant-based meat alternatives. Indulge in savory kabobs, delicate dolmas, and satisfying gyros, ensuring a diverse and delicious journey through the region’s cuisine.

As a devoted matcha enthusiast, I admit to being quite particular about my matcha lattes. Without a shadow of a doubt, Matchaful is my absolute favorite spot in New York City for an exquisite matcha experience – in fact, I even order my matcha powder directly from them. I deeply appreciate that their ceremonial-grade matcha is organically sourced from sustainable farms in Japan, ensuring unparalleled quality and taste.

Beyond their everyday offerings, be sure to keep an eye out for their charming seasonal creations, especially around holidays like Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and Christmas – they are always so beautifully themed and creatively designed, adding a special touch to any celebration.
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
When it comes to vegan ice cream, Van Leeuwen is hands down my absolute favorite spot. While they offer a mix of traditional and vegan flavors, their plant-based creations are nothing short of extraordinary – some of the creamiest, most indulgent vegan ice creams you’ll find anywhere in NYC. My go-to order every single time is their decadent vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb, generously topped with warm hot fudge. The texture is so unbelievably smooth and rich, I’m constantly amazed by their ability to achieve such perfection without dairy!
